In 1961 the Italian artist Piero Manzoni produced what became his most iconic oeuvre: Merda d’Artista, 90 cans with 30 g of the artist’s shit, sold at the then-current price of gold. 50 years later the boxes are worth 150’000 $. The work is an ironic reference to the willingness of the art market to buy everything as long as it is signed. Hugues Peyret tracked down the remaining 89 boxes and their owners around the world.
